Best qualified candidates will be endorsed for fellowship applications to which we currently have a 100% (4 out of 4) success rate.

Postdoctoral and PhD positions are usually paid according to the TVL scheme. Teaching and administrative duties are generally low, with amount and balance depending on the particular project as well as background, qualifications and experience of candidates.

Muenster hosts many excellent scientific institutions such as a newly founded Max-Planck Institute for biomedical research, a Centre for Nanotechnology or a great number of specialised research areas ("SFBs"). Muenster is a dynamic city with a world-famous heritage centre and in the middle of the beautiful ''Muensterland''. It is very lively, last not least because of the high number of students and the rich choice of social, cultural and sporting facilities (see www.muenster.de )

Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
Equal opportunity regulations apply.
MASTER THESES at the IEB, Institute of Evolution and Biodiversity, University of Muenster,Germany.

Students are invited to apply for the following projects:
  • Experimental Molecular Evolution: In this project we investigate the influence of functional promiscouity (enzymes with dual function) on the evolvability of new, previously latent functions. The project is in collaboration with structural biologists and experimentalists in Cambridge, UK.
  • Computational Analysis of an (Unfortunately) Successful Bio-invasion: In this project, which is in collaboration with Prof. Throsten Reusch's group we aim at a better understanding of how and why the comb-jelly Mnemiopsis leydii managed to spread across the baltic sea in virtually no time. Furthermore, we aim at providing monitoring and data resources to the scientific community.
  • Evolution of Proteins by Domain Arrangements Proteins evolve, to a large extent, by modular rearrangements of conserved functional units. Building on earlier research the student will investigate a long standing riddle, the question how how domains emerge in a lineage by recruiting exons, error prone retrotransposition of other genetic mechanisms. Methods will include comaprative genomics and phylogenetic studies and in several genome projects.

Candidates should have done their courses ad part of the MSc in Münster or elsewhere.Interested candidates should send an email to Prof. Bornberg-Bauer (see above for details) detailing: education, relevant skills or experience and names of prospective referees.

Projects will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental groups at the IEB, the faculty and beyond.
Essential qualifications are:
  • BSc degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, physics or bioinformatics
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and programming
  • Good communication skills, English
